Instructions are the text the agent reads at the start of every turn. They are split into two sections: General says who the agent is and what it does, and Guardrails lists what it must never do. You edit both on one screen.

Before you start

  • An approved agent. See Request an agent.
  • The tools you want the agent to use switched on under Build, then Tools. Only enabled tools appear in the @ menu. See Agent tools.
1

Open Build, then Instructions

Open your agent and select Build, then Instructions. The page has two sections, General and Guardrails. A new agent arrives pre-filled from its template, and a banner says “Pre-filled from the Lead Qualifier template.” with “Edit and save to make it yours.” Select Dismiss on the banner to hide it. The banner stays dismissed for that agent in this browser.
2

Edit the General section

Replace or edit the script. The seeded Lead Qualifier script shows the shape that works: short labelled blocks, each in square brackets, which Kylo prints in bold as you type.
Replace the placeholder address with a real address. The seeded script uses ADVISOR_EMAIL and TEMPLATE_NAME as placeholders, and the agent sends mail to whatever the text names.
3

Insert a mention with @

Type @ in General. A list opens under the field, and it filters as you type after the @. Click a row to insert it. The list holds:The mention list is not offered in Guardrails.
4

Edit the Guardrails section

Write the rules the agent must hold even when the customer pushes. The seeded Guardrails numbers each rule, for example “Do not say a tool worked unless it returned ok” and “Do not write your own WhatsApp template. Fill only the slots the instructions name.” Keep each rule to one sentence.
5

Open the expanded editor for long text

Select the expand button next to a section title. A dialog titled General or Guardrails opens with a larger editor. Edits there are the same text, not a copy.
6

Save your changes

As soon as you edit, a bar appears at the bottom with “You have unsaved changes. Do you wish to save them?” Select Save changes to store them, or Discard to return to the last saved text. If saving fails the bar shows “Could not save. Try again.” and keeps your edits.
Your agent now uses the saved text on its next turn. Test it in the Playground before it talks to customers.

Instructions for one channel only

By default every channel uses the General script. In the Playground, Overview, the switch Sync with global instructions controls this. Turn it off to write instructions for that channel only. Per-channel text is limited to 20,000 characters.
Instructions can name a tool only if the tool is enabled. An @ mention of a disabled tool does not appear in the list, and the agent cannot call it.

Next: add data sources

Give the agent your files and text to answer from.
